NEW BRUNSWICK — As Rutgers University’s governing body meets this afternoon to vote on a tuition hike, a look at rates at public schools in neighboring states shows that New Jersey’s largest state university is among the priciest for students attending a school in their own state.

And while out-of-state tuition at Rutgers could be considered a deal when compared to some other schools, the savings sometimes amounts to a few thousand dollars.

After a 2.5 percent increase last year, the average cost for a New Jersey student at Rutgers this year was $13,073 for commuters and $24,485 for those living on campus.

For students from out of state, tuition and fees at Rutgers was $23,393 for commuters and $37,805 for those living in campus dorms.
