New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy on Feb. 26 signed the Community College Opportunity Grant Program into state law during an appearance at Hudson County Community College in Jersey City.

Prior to the signing, Murphy acknowledged that New Jersey’s 18 community colleges play “a vital role” in the educational lives of many residents “but also in our economic future.”

“From day one, our commitment as an administration has been to ensure that no deserving student should be shut out of a future that a community college education can help because of a tuition bill,” he added.

Dr. Brian Bridges, the recently confirmed higher education secretary for New Jersey, was among those on hand for the signing, which he described as “a huge win for college affordability and a transformative moment in our state’s history.”
