On April 26, seven New Jersey gubernatorial candidates dropped by the AFTNJ 2025 Legislative Conference in Monroe Township to tout their experience, share their visions for the state and answer questions from members ahead of the June 10 primary.
The candidates who spoke were the six Democrats (U.S. Reps. Mikie Sherrill and Josh Gottheimer, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, NJEA President Sean Spiller and former N.J. Senate President Steve Sweeney), plus the lone Green Party candidate (Stephen Zielinski, who has worked in the food industry and as a commodities broker).
“For those of us who live in New Jersey … [the fall 2025] election is going to be critical for us,” AFTNJ President Jennifer S. Higgins said in her opening remarks.
During the event, Higgins presented North Bergen Federation of Teachers President Carol Toomey with a plaque commemorating AFT Local 1060’s 75th anniversary. Higgins also presented NJIT PSA AAUP President Amit Bose with Local 6773’s New Jersey State AFL-CIO certificate of affiliation.
