Local 1904’s Dr. Jennifer Goeke says K-12 teachers of students with disabilities already had their hands full implementing every student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP), which she describes as “plans that were written with in-person teaching in mind.”

The shift to online learning due to the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t helped matters, adds Goeke, an associate professor of special education at Montclair State University

“Teachers who dabbled in digital learning reported a desire to use it more often but noted challenges such as lack of time, preparation, professional development and support,” Goeke writes in a guest column published Aug. 5 by The Star-Ledger. “Successfully meeting students’ needs while simultaneously bringing themselves up to speed with technology is an almost impossible task.”

Goeke offers a handful of solutions; read her full column here.
