NEWARK — Hours before the state officially announced the departure of Newark schools superintendent Cami Anderson, city Mayor Ras Baraka said he would be happy to see her go.

“It would be great news for us,” Baraka said of the then-rumor that the state would swap out Newark Public Schools Superintendent Cami Anderson.

Responding to questions about rumors that former state education chief Chris Cerf would replace the embattled Anderson, Baraka said Monday at a Star-Ledger editorial board interview that he would not necessarily be opposed to the move, if it meant taking a step closer to local control of the school district.

Newark schools have been run by the state since 1995.

“I would need some assurances that local control is real,” Baraka said. “If anybody else comes, of course they should engage the community better (than Anderson has), but it should be a transitional person for a very short period of time.”

Cami Anderson will step down as Newark schools superintendent, state officials said Monday.
