UNION — Kean University violated state procurement law and its own purchasing policy when it bought a $250,000 conference table from a Chinese vendor, authorities said.

The table was on a boat from China to the United States before the university’s board of trustees voted to approve its purchase in May 2014, according to the Office of the State Comptroller (OSC).

The OSC said an email sent five months earlier stated that Kean President Dawood Farahi “gave the green light for the table to be made” and for the university to pay about $200,000 for it. Other contract documents, payments and correspondence corroborated that the project began before trustees approved it, the OSC said.
