The governing boards of Rutgers University symbolically flexed their muscles on Wednesday, endorsing a set of principles asserting their authority to block Trenton’s evolving bid to drastically restructure the university.

But the boards left the door open to a compromise plan for a restructuring – which is being pushed by Governor Christie – provided they’re not left with the bill.

Legislation introduced Monday would enable Rutgers to absorb most of the debt-ridden University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The legislative proposal would also loosen Rutgers’ authority over its campuses in Camden and Newark.
