A California judge Tuesday struck down teacher tenure laws in a landmark decision that will have serious ramifications for public education across the country.

In the case, Vergara v. California, nine public school students argued that they received an inferior education because they had ineffective teachers who were impossible to fire, according to The Washington Post.

In addition, the plaintiffs claimed tenure employment policies that privilege seniority over effectiveness disproportionately affect low-income and minority students.
