NEW BRUNSWICK – Rutgers University voted Thursday to raise tuition 2.3 percent, citing salary costs, a drop in state aid, and school investments as reasons.

University officials said the increase was “relatively moderate” and noted that they also raised financial aid grants by 3.2 percent to help students in need.

Nat Bender, communications director with the American Federation of Teachers New Jersey, said he was concerned about rising spending in areas like athletics and the merger. The hope, he said, was that the university was not asking students or families to shoulder the cost.
