Women who take paid leave from work after the birth of their child are more likely to stay on the job and be paid more when they return, according to a Rutgers University study released on Thursday.

The study, conducted by the Center for Women and Work at Rutgers University and commissioned by the National Partnership for Women & Families, seeks to boost the passage of nationwide legislation for paid family leave. New Jersey’s workers have been able to take paid leave to care for a newborn or seriously ill family member since mid-2009.

“As more women are entering the workforce, there’s an increased need for family-friendly workplace practices like paid family leave,’’ said Karen White, director of the work and family programs at the Center for Woman and Work at Rutgers University. “The U.S. currently lags far behind other industrialized countries in providing paid family leave.”
