NEW BRUNSWICK — More than 2,000 Rutgers University employees, ranging from administrative assistants to assistant deans, will see an average 8.25 percent raise over the course of a new 46-month contract with the university.

The Union of Rutgers Administrators-American Federation of Teachers announced Thursday that its members voted overwhelming this week to approve the new deal, which runs through July 1, 2018.

The pact extends the recall period for laid off union members from 18 months to 30 months, caps increases on health insurance contribution rates and provides increased professional development opportunities, according to the union.

“We reached the best deal we could,” said Lucye Millerand, union president.

The administrative staff union has about 2,350 members with an average salary of about $57,000, according to the union.

A key in the contract talks was to secure protections from raises being withheld, also a sticking point in Rutgers’ negotiations with its faculty union before the two sides agreed to a deal earlier this year, said Greg Rusciano, union director.
