Ursino, the fancy farm-to-table restaurant on the Kean University campus that opened amid great fanfare about four years ago, “is closed temporarily for remodeling,” university spokeswoman Margaret McCorry said Tuesday.

The restaurant, a pet project of university president Dawood Farahi, offered entrees between $25 and $33, with many ingredients sourced from a four-acre farm on the premises of Liberty Hall Museum, which is adjacant to the university’s main campus Union Township.

James Castiglione, associate professor of physics and president of the Kean Federation of Teachers, said in a telephone interview on Tuesday, “It’s hard to understand why the university opened a high-end restaurant in a science building in the first place. And it wasn’t surprising that it was a money-loser for the university. The university should refocus its resources into the classroom and on academic and student services to provide a quality education for our students and the services necessary to help them graduate on-time.”
