Since January, Rowan University and Rutgers-Camden have barreled out of control toward a merger that no one seems able to justify or condemn with any degree of confidence.

Gov. Chris Christie called for this shotgun wedding and thought he could make it happen — no matter the size or volume of the opposition — by the force of his will. Moreover, Christie insists his entire plan for statewide higher ed reorganization (under which Rutgers absorbs UMDNJ in Piscataway, too) happen by July 1.

Somebody needs to step on the brakes. Now.
