The reorganization of New Jersey’s higher education is running into unnecessary snags because of Gov. Chris Christie’s arrogance and insistence that his plan is the only plan and that it is an all-or-nothing proposition.

The latest opposition to his proposal to merge Rutgers-Camden and Rowan University came Thursday when the Rutgers University board of trustees voted overwhelmingly to reject any merger plan that would sever the Camden campus from Rutgers.

The board voted, 32-4, for a resolution opposing a complete takeover of the Camden campus by Rowan.

It is time for the Rutgers Board of Governors to follow suit.

Christie should realize that his long-term goal is best accomplished by negotiation, not by executive fiat or an oratorical whip.
