The Rutgers Board of Trustees today overwhelmingly rejected any plan to reorganize New Jersey’s higher education system that would result in the loss of the university’s Camden campus.

By a 32-4 vote, the trustees — one of two boards governing the 44,000-student university — adopted a resolution calling the merger of Rutgers-Camden with Rowan University “inconsistent with the mission of Rutgers University.”

Although the trustees rejected the severance of the Camden campus, they held open the possibility of a compromise with Gov. Chris Christie, who has demanded the university give up its South Jersey campus.

“While we do not support such severance, we remain open to alternative proposals where Rutgers-Camden remains part of Rutgers University,” the trustees said in the resolution.
