State Senate President Stephen Sweeney, in a recent Courier-Post op-ed (“Consolidation plan good for South Jersey,” Forum, March 3), conjectured that student and faculty opposition to the proposed Rowan takeover of Rutgers-Camden is due primarily to “fear of change.”

Emotion, he claims, “has gotten in the way of a civil discourse.” Continuing on, he refers to the takeover — currently endorsed by both Gov. Chris Christie and the Senate president — as a “partnership.”

As a faculty member of Rutgers-Camden, I can assure the good senator that fear is the last emotion driving our response. What we do exude is passion — passion in our commitment to our students, to our vocation and to our community. Do not confuse passion with fear. Any organization, educational or otherwise, would be pleased to have such ardent supporters. There exists also an abundance of civil discourse on the Rutgers-Camden campus about this issue.
