Having exceeded 1 million books distributed in 2022 as part of its Reading Opens the World initiative, the AFT on Dec. 10 said it plans to distribute another million books in 2023.

“Reading is foundational,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten in a press release. “It is necessary for virtually everything we do—and for experiencing the joy of a great book. When children see themselves in books, they feel seen, welcomed and loved. When children are introduced to others in books, they experience the wonder of new ideas.”

She added, “Books bring joy — and they really do open the world. That’s why as others are banning books and denigrating educators, teachers and their unions are continuing our efforts to create a nation of joyful and confident readers.”

“I believe the greatest gift we can pass on to the next generation is the gift of literacy,” said AFTNJ President Donna M. Chiera upon being told of the AFT’s book-giveaway goal for 2023. “Having the ability to read opens so many doors. AFT distributed a million books this year and in turn opened up a million minds so our students can learn, dream, imagine and create, unlocking endless possibilities that can impact generations to come.”
