AFT President Randi Weingarten stepped away from AFT TEACH 2021 on July 7 to appear in a segment with MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace on critical race theory and how it has become part of what Wallace described as “the culture war.”

“I don’t care when the right wing goes after me,” Weingarten said. “You know, we’re big girls; this is part of the territory. I am really concerned when I see the bullying of teachers in classrooms, and that’s part of what I’m offended by. Go after me; don’t go after classroom teachers who have spent their life this year trying to help kids.”

Weingarten went on to say, “What we teach in high school or elementary school or middle school is we teach history — common history — and want kids to be able to understand it and to analyze history.”
