WASHINGTON—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten on the resignation of Cami Anderson, state district superintendent for the Newark (N.J.) Public Schools:
“Every child deserves a high-quality public education at a great neighborhood school, and we must ensure such an education is available to all. Unfortunately, and seemingly at every turn, Cami Anderson undercut that aspiration in Newark—ignoring the community, the school board, parents, students, and educators. The divisive One Newark plan the community rejected from the start is a perfect example.
“The superintendent’s imminent departure is an opportunity to undo the many mistakes made under her leadership.
“What remains to be seen is whether Gov. Chris Christie will listen to the Newark community. Ultimately, the community has a right to control its public schools, but in the interim, the next superintendent needs to embark on a new chapter in Newark—one marked by working in the best interests of its students and families—which starts with listening to the community and working with, not battling, its educators. The community is ready for a reset, but the governor must hear their voices.”
