First lady Dr. Jill Biden and U.S. Education Secretary Dr. Miguel A. Cardona on Jan. 20 visited Bergen Community College in Paramus to put a spotlight on $198 million in American Rescue Plan funding that’s been designated for higher education, with a focus on supporting the needs of community colleges.

“It was refreshing to listen to speeches about education supports from people who actually work in the education field and understand what students, faculty and staff truly need,” said AFTNJ President Donna M. Chiera, who attended the event. “This was such a natural conversation for Biden and Cardona to have; they understood and believed in what they were saying.

“I’m pleased that President Biden picked a secretary of education who worked his way through the educational system to get where he is today. And as first lady, Jill Biden remains an adjunct professor and has her finger on the pulse of the nation’s colleges and universities.”
