Rutgers Sanctuary Alex

By Patricia Alex

Activists pushing for Rutgers University to declare itself a sanctuary for undocumented students disrupted a meeting of the school’s governing board on Tuesday, even as the administration reiterated its vow to protect the students.

David Hughes, president of the faculty union, said Barchi’s letter appeared to have gone further than an earlier one in November, while stopping short of an official sanctuary designation.

“President Barchi listened to the students and faculty so we’re happy with that,” Hughes said.

But some student activists say they will keep the pressure on until an official sanctuary designation is made.
