NEW BRUNSWICK — Rutgers University has struck its first contract with the former health care professionals at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, agreeing to raises between 7.25 and 9.5 percent over the next four years.

The deal was announced last week by the Health Professionals and Allied Employees union, which has about 1,900 members ranging from pharmacists and researchers to social workers and health care case managers.

The contract includes tuition discounts for dependent children, protections from wage freezes and a cap on increases in health insurance costs, according to the union.

Rutgers and UMDNJ merged in 2013 as part of a statewide higher education restructuring.

“This contract is an important achievement in recognizing the value that Legacy UMDNJ health professionals have brought to Rutgers since the reorganization,” said Tom Murphy, co-president of HPAE Local 5094. “Our goal was to achieve a contract that brought parity with other Rutgers employees, and provided stable raises that will help us retain our dedicated staff.”
