When Glassboro State, a small teachers college, was about to be renamed Rowan after a generous benefactor, there were howls of protest about fooling around with cherished tradition. Today Rowan University is a proud institution.
This comes to mind because they’re choosing sides again over changing a school’s name and its organizational structure. Under a plan endorsed by Gov. Chris Christie, Rowan would take control of Rutgers University-Camden. Along with it comes a law school, business school and a heavily guarded campus in Camden.
That’s controversial enough, but timing is everything. As this is happening, Rowan is opening a medical school that is allied with Cooper University Hospital, which just happens to have South Jersey political boss George Norcross as its chairman. The University of Medicine and Dentistry would merge with that part of Rutgers that is in Central Jersey.
