Rutgers-Camden should be given more autonomy and should not merge with Rowan University under a reorganization of higher education in New Jersey, a coalition of labor groups said Monday.

“Rutgers-Camden must remain a part of Rutgers University,” the unions said in proposing a “legislative framework” for a higher-ed makeover. The groups also said partnerships between Rutgers-Camden and Rowan “should be encouraged and supported.”

The framework was prepared by nine unions representing workers at Rutgers, Rowan and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Its view runs contrary to a plan announced by Gov. Chris Christie in January that would merge Rutgers-Camden into Glassboro-based Rowan. Christie’s plan has faced strong opposition from Rutgers-Camden supporters, and legislators and university leaders in recent weeks have crafted an alternate proposal during closed-door meetings.

Christie had no reaction to the unions’ proposal, said Kevin Roberts, a spokesman for the governor.
