NEW BRUNSWICK — One Rutgers University student sobbed as she described choosing between buying food and paying her tuition. Another said his immigrant father burst into tears worrying about how his family would cover tuition bills. A third student described the plight of classmates running up tens of thousands of dollars of debt before graduation.

Members of the Rutgers Board of Governors said they were moved by the students who came before them pleading for a tuition freeze at their meeting in New Brunswick today. Dozens more students staged a noisy protest outside, chanting “Keep Rutgers public!”
But, in the end, the board voted unanimously to raise tuition and fees 2.5 percent this fall for in-state undergraduates. That means the average Rutgers student will pay $13,073 in annual tuition and fees — $318 more than last year — in addition to increases in room, board and other costs.
