Rowan University faculty and staff may issue a position statement opposing the proposed merger of their campus with Rutgers-Camden. The position statement maintains the proposed university restructuring bill is detrimental to both schools. It also advocates voluntary partnerships between Rowan and Rutgers rather than forced collaboration. Rutgers University’s two governing boards adopted similar principles last week. Proposed legislation would create a joint governing board with authority over both Rowan and Rutgers-Camden. The Camden campus would keep the Rutgers name.  But faculty and staff in Camden say the institution wouldn’t be a part of Rutgers really. Promoting the merger are Gov. Christie and South Jersey Democratic Boss George Norcross.

Here is the statement from Rowan University Senate President Eric Milou:

  • Does such a board create greater educational opportunities in southern New Jersey?
  • Does it improve the quality or delivery of education?
  • Does such reorganization reduce the costs of education for the state?
  • Does it create greater and equal educational opportunities for all New Jersey residents?

The answer to each of these questions is absolutely NOT.
