TRENTON — The state Senate will not vote on the controversial higher education restructuring act today, as planned, state Senate President Stephen Sweeney said.

The bill, which would reshuffle three of the state’s largest universities, was expected to pass the Senate sometime today. Instead, Sweeney said the Senate will vote on amendments to the bill, but not the full legislation.

He dismissed speculation that the delay signals weakening support for the restructuring proposal.
