State lawmakers held a packed hearing at UMDNJ in Newark today to hear concerns about a major overhaul of the state’s medical schools.
In less than four months, UMDNJ is expected to transfer three of its schools and some 3,000 employees to Rutgers. It will also eventually be renamed New Jersey Health Sciences University.
Jean Pierce is a staffer at the union that represents thousands of registered nurses and researchers at UMDNJ. Like many others in the room, she’s worried about the state’s financial commitment to the plan.
“How does Newark sustain if central Jersey goes away, or portions of central Jersey are taken away from UMDNJ? What happens to the healthcare, what happens to University Hospital, what happens to the clinics?”
