The governor’s office is hoping to break up the state’s medical school by July 1, the school’s president said Tuesday, even as cost estimates for the reorganization continue to mount.

Denise Rodgers told lawmakers at a hearing in Newark that work was ongoing to merge some of the University of Medicine and Dentistry’s most successful pieces with Rutgers University by summer.

“There is a desire by the governor’s office to meet that deadline,” Rodgers said.

Governor Christie’s office has been publicly mum on a timetable for the reorganization, its costs, and the manner in which it would happen. It has stuck to the tight-lipped strategy even as legislators held hearings, and public officials, employees and members of the public asked for details.
