For decades, New Jersey’s higher education system has taken one blow after another. Funds have been cut to the point that educational leaders are demoralized. And repeated efforts to unscramble its chaotic organization have failed, victims mostly of the parochial interests of each region.

We stand now at a moment in which that might change. A major bond issue to fund capital projects, the most pressing need, is shaping up for this fall. And now, a plan to put medical education and research into the hands of Rutgers University, the state’s crown jewel, is ready.

The heart of the plan is a broader vision for the mother campus in New Brunswick.

It’s the big winner, without doubt, savior of the state’s medical schools. An opportunity for Rutgers to be a national leader in bioscience and medical research, drawing top scientific talent, with the investments and jobs that come with them.
