In early July, the U.S. Department of Education issued “Designing for Education With Artificial Intelligence.” It’s a guide the agency says is meant to inform developers, legal teams and others “as they work toward safety, security and trust while creating AI products and services for use in education.”
The guide is in response to President Joe Biden’s executive order from Oct. 20, 2023, calling for the Safe, Secure and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence.
“We have attempted to address topics that will be relevant across the continuum of edtech developers, which includes established firms and newcomers, as well as developers across research, nonprofit and for-profit organizations,” the guide’s introduction reads. “We address not only developers of products for formal education settings — including elementary and secondary schools, colleges, and universities— but also for educational uses at home, community and other informal settings.”
