In a virtual event Jan. 21 honoring teachers, first lady Dr. Jill Biden spoke about President Joe Biden’s plan to safely reopen schools nationwide and that working together will be part of the process.
“He’s following the science and best practices, and he will be engaging with educators, all of you and your unions,” she said. “Educators, this is our moment because we know how to turn chaos into something beautiful — we do it every day in our classrooms.”
Also participating in the meeting was AFT President Randi Weingarten, who said it marked a moment “when educators feel respected.”
“We’re working with an educator in the White House, someone who walks in our shoes, who knows the challenges and aspirations of our children,” Weingarten added. “That is more than I can ever have imagined before this moment.”
