Dr. Anthony Fauci closed his Jan. 28 fireside chat with AFT President Randi Weingarten and NEA President Becky Pringle by acknowledging both the importance and the needs of the educational community during the pandemic.

“The only message I can say is, and I mean this sincerely, that the educational community — the teachers and the teams associated with education — are such an absolutely critical part of society in general but also a very critical part of our response to this outbreak,” Fauci said. “Because we’re not going to get back to normal until we get the children back in school, both for the good of the children, for the good of the parents and for the good of the community. But we want to make sure we do that by giving the teachers and the team associated with the teachers the resources that they need to do that. The idea of saying, ‘Go do it on your own’ — that doesn’t work.”

Fauci also addressed the new strain of the virus, whether people can still transmit COVID-19 even if they’ve been vaccinated and more. Watch the discussion here.
