In a recent guest column for The Star-Ledger, Newark Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr. cites a national study that ranked his city as tops in the country for access to “beat the odds” public schools for Latino and black students.

“And this isn’t because our kids are smarter or otherwise different in Newark (every child has an inner genius) — rather it’s because the city has made a dedicated effort to remake and improve its schools to let the talents of the youth shine their brightest,” Ramos writes. “Put simply: It’s the adults who changed and allowed the kids to flourish as they always could.”
