Asked during his Aug. 21 media briefing about air-ventilation guidelines for schools, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy referred to ventilation as being among the “10 or 12 factors on the safety front” that could be legitimate grounds for delaying in-person instruction in the fall.

Murphy then deferred to Dr. Christina Tan from the Department of Health for specifics on ventilation.

“So we do hope that school districts are already familiar with the indoor air quality standard that has been in existence for many years,” Dr. Tan said. “That particular indoor standard sets forth a lot of different guidance for school districts.”

She added, “For every school district, there should be a designated person who is responsible for indoor air quality.” Also, there should be a written plan that “will follow a lot of the different guidance that is set forth in the rules,” Tan said.
