President-elect Joe Biden on Dec. 8 said that it should be “a national priority to get our kids back into school and keep them in school,” adding that he and his team aim to have the majority of U.S. schools reopened within his first 100 days as president.

“If Congress provides the funding, we need to protect students, educators and staff,” said Biden, also stressing the need for states and cities to establish strong public health measures that everyone must follow.

Should all of those factors fall into place, along with students sufficiently spaced apart in classrooms, AFT President Randi Weingarten said it would be “reasonable” for schools to reopen within Biden’s proposed time period, reports Associated Press writer Will Weissert.

“We finally have a president-elect who understands that we need resources and strong public health measures in order to reopen school buildings,” Weingarten added.
