President-elect Joe Biden on Dec. 23 named former AFT member and longtime Connecticut educator Dr. Miguel A. Cardona as his selection to be the next education secretary.
“I’m grateful for the chance to take on this responsibility,” Cardona said. “I look forward to getting to work on behalf of America’s children and the families and the communities and the nation they will grow up to inherit and lead.”
Biden’s selection was met with approval from AFT President Randi Weingarten.
“Miguel Cardona is not just a proud product of public schools — he’s made strengthening public education and fighting for equity his life’s work,” Weingarten said. “With his experience as a student, fourth-grade teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and commissioner in Connecticut, Dr. Cardona — a former AFT member — will transform the Education Department to help students thrive, a reversal of the [Betsy] DeVos disaster of the last four years.”
