Union leaders, teachers, parents, students, and community members will join together in calling for every Newark student having access to high-quality public education and in standing up to the Trump-DeVos political agenda as part of national day of action.
NEWARK, NJ – On Thursday, Jan. 19, the day before the inauguration of Donald Trump, American Federation of Teacher’s President Randi Weingarten will join AFTNJ President Donna M. Chiera, Newark Teachers Union (NTU) President John Abeigon, and dozens of teachers, parents, students and community members at a demonstration that will stand up against the Trump-DeVos political agenda and call for every Newark student having the ability to access high quality public education.
The demonstrations, which will take place at 25 different public schools across Newark, have been coordinated by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the Alliance to Reclaim our Schools (AROS). AFT, AFTNJ, NTU and AROS have worked alongside each other for years to support educators, staff, students and parents in Newark. The day of action will show the incoming administration that any attempt to privatize, demonize, supplant or divest in public education will be met with resistance.
Thursday’s demonstrations across Newark are part of a national day of action co-sponsored by the AFT and AROS. 100,000 people are participating in similar day of action events at over 2,000 schools in 200 cities.
