It’s time for New Jersey’s 1.4 million students to head back to school — and what better way to welcome them back than to recognize teachers who have worked tirelessly for their students.

Donna M. Chiera, president of the American Federation of Teachers New Jersey and a retired special education teacher from Perth Amboy, said truly great teachers possess several key traits.

“A great teacher should have mastery of their subject matter so they know the content they are teaching and a commitment to lifelong learning so they continue to grow professionally combined with an understanding of childhood and adolescent development,” Chiera said. “These traits contribute to the ability to inspire and encourage the next generation of students to become healthy engaged citizens and future leaders.”
