After suffering two years of dramatic job cuts, not to mention the wrath and budget-slashing zeal of Governor Christie, it turns out the education sector could be among the best bets for job hunters.
At least that’s one implication of the jobs report for March released this week, which showed a surge in government hiring — likely in education — even as almost every key sector of New Jersey’s economy shed jobs.
All of the public-sector employment increase of 3,000 jobs came in local government, an area that expanded for most of the last decade, but lost more than 31,000 jobs in the last two years as local, state and federal governments struggled with revenue shortfalls.
A large proportion of the March jobs were added in education, according to seasonally unadjusted employment figures, which are less accurate than the regular job data but provide detail on a wider range of employment sectors.
