WAYNE — About 18 months ago, New Jersey voters agreed to use bonds to build at the state’s colleges and universities.

Today, with state support on hand, William Paterson University broke ground on a new academic building in the heart of its campus in Wayne. Officials said the university was building its future – with the state’s assistance.

“This is just a fantastic opportunity for our school,” said Warren Sandmann, the university’s provost.

The $40 million academic building will be paid for by $30 million from the “Building our Future” Bond Act, passed in November 2012. The William Paterson project is one of 176 projects totaling $1.2 billion across the state’s colleges and universities, said Rochelle Hendricks, the state’s secretary of higher education.
