Morale at Rutgers-Newark is low, buildings are antiquated and students receive inadequate services, university officials told state lawmakers at a hearing on the Newark campus today.

“I’ve never seen morale among faculty staff and students lower. And it has little or nothing to do with the current scandals,” said Jack Lynch, acting senior associate dean of faculty.

The university spends $34,000 per student at its New Brunswick campus and only $18,000 a student in Newark, Lynch said. “Our students have been subsidizing the New Brunswick campus,” he said.

Lynch and other Rutgers-Newark officials spoke before the Assembly Budget Committee today during the panel’s third public hearing on Governor Christie’s proposed state budget. That $32.9 billion plan was introduced in February and a balanced budget must be approved before July 1.
