But Rutgers officials told him to stay home after Senate President Sweeney threatened legal action over his appointment, Perez said. Patti Sapone/the Star-Ledger
The New Brunswick attorney had studied a large packet of background materials to prepare to vote at his first meeting and was leaving for campus Thursday when he got a call from Rutgers’ top attorney.

Perez said he was told by John Farmer Jr., Rutgers senior counsel, to stay home. Rutgers did not want to swear him in.

“They called me about a half hour before and said not to come,” Perez said. “They told me Sen. Sweeney has threatened a lawsuit.”
