Unions representing workers at the three schools at the heart of a proposal to realign New Jersey’s public university system said Monday that they want a pledge that the plan won’t result in layoffs.
A coalition of union groups representing more than 30,000 workers at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and at Rutgers and Rowan universities issued a statement Monday seeking the guarantee and calling for greater transparency as the process unfolds.
Much of the work involved in hashing out the merger plan has been done in private as power brokers from around the state figure out how to reorganize the public universities.
“We need a public discussion among legislators and all stakeholders to safeguard the critical education, health care, research and community outreach functions of our institutions,” said Alex Bernstein, executive director of the American Association of University Professors at the medical and dentistry school. “We need a thorough fiscal analysis and answers to questions through an open legislative process.”
