Are there stirrings of compromise on the controversial plan to overhaul New Jersey’s public higher education system?

George Norcross, the South Jersey Democratic power broker, may think so. He’s been involved in a series of meetings on ways to merge the Camden campus of Rutgers with Rowan University — the key sticking point of the overhaul — without abandoning the Rutgers name.

“The students and the faculty of Rutgers-Camden have legitimate concerns about what they perceive is a future structure. And it’s important that we try to reason together and come up with a solution that will elevate higher education in southern New Jersey and in the state of New Jersey,” Norcross said in an interview Thursday.
