NEW BRUNSWICK — Robert L. Barchi today was named the 20th president of Rutgers University.
In a meeting of the university’s board of governors, Barchi, 65, was given a 10-year appointment to head the state university in a unanimous vote.
Barchi, who served eight years as president of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, had announced last year that he planned to step down and return to teaching. He succeeds current Rutgers president Richard McCormick, who similarly announced his intention to return to the faculty.
Earlier in the morning, the Rutgers board of trustees approved a consent resolution, giving their approval for the appointment.
