The New York Police Department’s surveillance of Muslim groups at Rutgers University has prompted community leaders to call for an outside investigation into whether the police had either the jurisdiction or the probable cause to target the New Jersey groups.

Muslim leaders say they are drafting a letter to the state Attorney General’s office asking for its own probe of the NYPD’s investigation.

“We encourage them to investigate this spying,” said Aref Assaf, president of the Paterson-based American-Arab Forum. Assaf said at least a half dozen advocacy groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union, are working together on the request.
