NEWARK — Hundreds of people worried about the future of Newark turned out last night to speak against a plan to restructure the state’s medical education system.
Faculty, students and alumni of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey cautioned against a proposed merger of three parts of the institution with Rutgers University.
The fear is that if the merger goes forward, the remaining components of UMDNJ in Newark would face an uncertain future.
Maintaining an orderly composure, most of the estimated crowd of 200 pleaded with a state committee to not change what’s already working.
They warned that if the Newark components are ultimately abandoned, the city would lose a major economic engine and the health of its residents would be endangered.
