AFT President Randi Weingarten was the closing speaker May 11 in New Providence at an event intended to counter former President Donald Trump’s rally in Wildwood that same day.

“We are in a race in this country between hope and fear,” Weingarten said at NJ-07 Stands Up to Trump: New Jersey Day of Action. “And it’s also a race between chaos and community.”

She touched upon a variety of issues gripping the nation, among them book bans, the limiting of women’s reproductive rights and the push to cut Title 1 funding.

“This is the reality that so many people face in the United States right now, all being led by Donald Trump. … There’s so much that’s gonna come out of Trump’s mouth, it’s not tethered to any reality. It’s tethered to he wants to win at all costs because it’s about him,” Weingarten said. “I believe in this United States, hope will trump fear.”

U.S. Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill, whose reelection campaign hosted NJ-07 Stands Up to Trump, spoke prior to Weingarten. So did congressional candidate Sue Altman, who is seeking the Democratic nomination to run against incumbent Republican Congressman Tom Kean Jr.
