Pledging to add the voice of education workers to organized labor, AFTNJ President Donna M. Chiera joined the Executive Board of the New Jersey State AFL-CIO labor federation, November 28 in Princeton.
The group coordinates efforts to elect labor-friendly representatives, promote legislation to advance workers rights, support collective bargaining and organizing efforts.
“I welcome the opportunity to join my sisters and brothers in labor at this level,” Chiera said. “I will be an advocate for education from pre-kindergarten through higher education and make sure public workers’ issues such as affordable, quality healthcare and a secure retirement are voiced.”
Chiera replaces HPAE-AFT President Ann Twomey, who recently retired. “Ann is a legand who informed healthcare policy discussions and made conditions for healthcare workers a primary consideration,” Chiera said. “I will continue her legacy of advocacy for healthcare workers.”
